HOW TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL FASHION BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

HOW TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL FASHION BUSINESS IN NIGERIA; PRICING (PART 3)

I woke up with a nagging headache.

It was 4.30am. It was a miracle that I had slept at all following the events of the previous day.

I had barely 24 hours to complete my rent or be thrown out of my shop; my landlady had said so.

I was frustrated and angry. I was frustrated because I had spent my entire resources and youth on a fruitless venture-fashion.

I was angry because I couldn't simply quit even if I wanted to. Fashion was the love of my life and I had no idea what to fall back on if I quit.

This might not be your experience but this was mine and in one way or the other, I know we all find ourselves in frustrating situations around money in this business.

It shouldn't be so.

On pricing,

1)You shouldn't guess prices for your fashion items.

You should calculate based on what you will spend on buying materials and other costs.

E.g.

A)Imagine you don't have a sewing machine and you have to take your clothes to a sewing hub to make.

For each day, you would have to pay at least N1000 per machine. This cost usually covers electricity. Some hubs charge as much as 1500.

Put down the amount as cost of machine rent  and electricity to work on the outfit. If it would take more than 1 day, multiply that amount by the number of days.

B) If you wanted to hire labor and pay per outfit, how much would you pay? Put that down as cost of labor...even if you are doing the work all by yourself.

C) Calculate all the materials you will buy to make the outfit. Include transportation cost if any.

D) Choose any amount of your choice as profit.

E)Add up A to D and you have yourself a reasonable price for your services.

2) Your prices should be low enough to attract customers and high enough to make profit.

If you are just starting out your fashion business and you want to get customers, this formula would help you get and retain good customers.

Remember, your aim is to make profit and not merely fill your shop with customers fabrics.

If you already have an existing fashion business and you want to scale up, you can work your way around the formula and numbers to suit you.

You can increase your profit margin or increase the cost of your machine rent daily. You can alter other areas.

Someone that pays 1million on rent yearly will definitely charge higher machine rent than someone that pays 150,000....or less than 1m.

I hope this post helps. Let me know some of

your challenges and what next you want me to post on.

Ball baby dress with illusion neckline... Ankara and net

Consisistency.

Work in progress by Maison D'erex student Ezinne Mercy Oliwe

I heard of a story....the fast moving dog and the slow crawlimg tortoise.

The two creatures were to run a race.

The dog must have laughed a very loud laugh. The tortoise was definitely no match for him.

The race started and the both animals took off.

As expected, the dig was way ahead of the tortoise.

Bored from not having a competent competitor, the dog would stop every now and then to eat human excreta.

He would play and after sometime continue the race each time finding the tortoise far behind him.

The tortoise kept crawling ever slowly but never stopping. He was steady.

After a while, the dog ran towards the finish line and to his greatest surprise, the tortoise was already there; clenching the highly coveted price.

Consistency always pays. Keep doing the right stuff no matter how little the progress rate.

When you set out to learn sewing, stay focused.

Don't go chasing everything that a sewing machine can sew.

Today you make duvets, tomorrow you make curtains. Next tomorrow you make shoes...and on goes the list.

STAY FOCUSED.

Dress making is so vast that you can specialize in so many areas without doing a little of everything thereby ending up not mastering any of the areas.

Many intending fashion designers want to enroll in places where they will learn both male and female clothing.

Yes, there is no wrong in that but learn one first and master it. Don't spread your energy and focus too thin; it will yield no good fruits.

You can learn and master female clothing first and then decide to enroll under a male clothing master to master the art of male clothing.

By the end of the day, you can choose which of the fields work best for you and specialize.

Not only do you confuse yourself when you jump into everything, you also confuse your customers and many well paying clients will see you as one without specialization and refuse to do business with you.

ANKARA BOMBER JACKET WITH WELT POCKET

I once had a student...a beautiful young woman.

She was someone's wife and a mother to a handsome young man.

She would show up early enough for our morning classes with her son strapped to her back.

This she did on a daily basis not minding the distance.

She would put the little boy down after sometime and let him play by himself.

After a while, the boy would play with things he wasn't supposed to play with and she would have to pick him up.

He would cry and make a fuss but she would pacify him and strap him to her back...again.

She would work on patterns and our sewing tutorials. She would use her phone to make videos when the baby won't let her concentrate fully and she would practice whenever she had the chance.

Despite the challenges of motherhood, she turned out one of our best students from that set.

What's your excuse?

I'm a wife...I'm a mother....my baby won't let me". Old line. You can if you make effort and make a conscious decision to do it, you have no idea how far you would go.

This lovely bomber jacket was made by our student who recently passed out from NYSC.

What to look out for when looking for a good fashion school

THE ANATOMY OF A WELL MOULDED BLOUSE BY EREX FASHION STUDENT.

Someone recently visited EREX ACADEMY OF FASHION for a "brush up" course after training somewhere else for 2 years without results.

Incidentally, the student could not make most of what we had on our 3 months beginners course and that meant she wasn't qualified for a higher course. Remember, she had trained elsewhere for 2 years!!! Long enough to get a diploma.

The aunty wanted a discount... A major one. Her reason for wanting a huge discount was that she had paid somewhere else. Ah!!!

To all reading this, you don't work on the mountain and reap in the valley.

You don't pay elsewhere and expect to be taught somewhere else.

Before you enroll in any fashion school, do your research properly. Ask questions.

What are their products?

Who are their students?

What is their course outline? Go to the school and ask to be shown. It is your right to be shown what you are paying for.

If they don't have a well stipulated course outline showing you what you are to learn within that duration, DO NOT ENROLL. I mean, DO NOT COMMIT YOUR MONEY.

Meanwhile, our student is still working on this classy piece. The finished work will be posted soon.

Stay hooked to this page to see the final photos.
